Despite the Crimson Tide’s three losses this season, Nick Saban, the former head coach of Alabama and current ESPN analyst, has consistently supported the team’s ranking in the College Football Playoffs. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Saban emphasized Alabama’s impressive wins over Georgia and South Carolina, two top-15 opponents, and their rigorous schedule as key factors in their selection.
“I do believe that your schedule is a strength. What teams did you defeat, and how many strong teams did you defeat? That, in my opinion, says a lot about the type of team you can be,” Saban said, highlighting the significance of recognizing teams that overcome challenging schedules.
The fact that Alabama is ranked higher than a number of two-loss teams, including Miami, Arizona State, and Iowa State, has generated controversy, particularly as championship weekend draws near. Saban cautioned about creating a precedent that may deter programs from scheduling difficult nonconference games, given that Texas, SMU, and Indiana are in the top 10 while having no victories over rated opponents.
In this playoff scenario, Saban stated, “I don’t think we want to do anything that’s going to enhance people not to play a tough schedule.” “You want good games, so you want people to plan some challenging nonconference games. Good games are what people want to witness.
