Former All-American and Jim Thorpe Award-winning safety Deandre Baker is returning to his alma mater as the new Defensive Backs Coach. Baker, who was a cornerstone of Georgia’s secondary during his collegiate career, is set to bring his experience and passion for the game back to Athens, where he will mentor the next generation of Bulldogs defenders.
Deandre Baker’s return to Georgia marks a significant reunion for both the player and the program. After an illustrious college career from 2015 to 2018, Baker established himself as one of the best defensive backs in the country, culminating in his selection as the Jim Thorpe Award winner in 2018, an honor given to the nation’s top defensive back.
His lockdown coverage, ball-hawking skills, and ability to neutralize some of the best wide receivers in college football helped elevate Georgia’s defense to national prominence.
Following his collegiate success, Baker was drafted by the New York Giants in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. While his NFL career faced challenges, Baker’s understanding of the game and his natural leadership qualities remained evident. Now, with a shift toward coaching, Baker is ready to impart the lessons he learned both on and off the field to Georgia’s defensive backs.
In his new role, Baker will inherit a talented but young secondary that is hungry for leadership and direction. Georgia has consistently produced top-tier defensive talent, and Baker’s presence is expected to further strengthen the development of players in the secondary.
His ability to connect with athletes due to his relatively recent playing experience and his understanding of the modern game is viewed as a major asset for the Bulldogs coaching staff.
Upon the announcement, Baker expressed his excitement to return to the program that helped shape his career. “Coming back to Georgia feels like coming home,” Baker said. “The experiences I had here, both as a player and a student, were invaluable. I’m excited to take on this new challenge and help these young guys grow, not just as players but as men.”
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart also praised the move, noting that Baker’s deep ties to the program and his firsthand knowledge of what it takes to succeed at the highest level make him the perfect addition to the coaching staff.
“Deandre knows what it means to be a Dawg, and he understands the commitment and excellence we strive for here. His experience and passion will resonate with our players, and I’m thrilled to have him back with us,” Smart said.
As Deandre Baker embarks on this new chapter of his football journey, Georgia fans are eager to see how his impact will translate on the field. With Baker’s return, the Bulldogs’ secondary is poised to continue its tradition of excellence, backed by one of its own legends.
