Houston Astros General Manager Dana Brown has announced plans to discuss a contract extension with Scott Boras, agent for All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, in the offseason.
Bregman, 30, is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season. Securing him to a long-term deal is a top priority for the Astros.
Brown expressed confidence in reaching an agreement, citing Bregman’s importance to the team. “Alex is a cornerstone player, and we want him here for the long haul.”
Scott Boras, known for his aggressive negotiation tactics, will likely seek a lucrative deal for Bregman. Industry insiders project a potential 5-7 year contract worth $150-200 million.
A 4-time All-Star and 2-time Silver Slugger, Bregman has established himself as one of baseball’s premier third basemen. He’s hit .281 with 132 home runs and 503 RBIs in his Astros career.
The Astros have demonstrated willingness to invest in key players, having signed Jose Altuve and Justin Verlander to significant extensions in recent years.
Bregman’s potential deal could be comparable to other top third basemen, such as Nolan Arenado (7 years, $260 million) and Manny Machado (10 years, $300 million).
Securing Bregman’s long-term future tops the Astros’ offseason agenda. Additional priorities include bolstering the starting rotation and addressing bullpen needs.
