The Blue Jays will not be able to acquire Orelvis Martinez at the trade deadline due to his suspension.

After Orelvis Martinez, one of the Toronto Blue Jays’ best prospects, was suspended, there may have been hope for those who still believed that the team might turn around this season and still be a major player come trade deadline day.

Martinez, who was ranked third among the Jays organization’s best prospects by Jays Journal, has been playing well for the Jays’ Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He had batted.260 with an OPS of.867 in 63 games, along with 14 doubles, 16 home runs, 46 RBI, and 46 runs scored.

Just last week, he was promoted to the major leagues, and the Jays were hoping to use his powerful bat to add some much-needed offense to their lineup. By doing this, they wanted to help the squad get back into the thick of things by pointing them in the proper path. Since Martinez would now be suspended by the Blue Jays for 80 games due to the PED charges, the earliest he could return to the field would be September. And they thought their offensive surge would get them back into the postseason.

But Martinez and the Jays have more problems than just that. The Jays won’t probably be aggressive buyers at this season’s trade deadline because of the ban. This is due to the fact that the Jays would be searching for big league-caliber additions that might boost their squad right away if they were seen to be in contention at the moment. In order to complete the deal, it will probably be necessary for a top prospect to go the other way, and Martinez is the Jays’ greatest trade piece.

Under normal conditions, Brandon Barriera and Ricky Tiedemann, the Jays’ top pitching prospects, may have also been important players in trade negotiations. Nonetheless, both players’ injury issues from the previous season and this one should be sufficient to deter prospective suitors for the time being. Martinez therefore served as the Jays’ best available prospect to trade because there aren’t many other prospects in the organization that may pique a significant enough interest. But that possible idea is now totally void due to the unannounced halt.

Therefore, with the double whammy of losing both Martinez’s lethal bat and his enormous value in a trade, sad to say, the Jays will have to stick with what they already have for the rest of the season. An even worst case scenario, they may be headed towards the sellers category in the not-so-distant future if their current struggles continue.
