Steelers made a shocking decision to releaseTrenton Thompson .

The Steelers announced on Wednesday that backup defensive back Trenton Thompson, 26, had been cut. Thompson joined the team during their 2023 training camp and spent time on the active roster and practice squad before being placed on injured reserve on January 10. Last season, Thompson saw action in six games with one start, totaling 22 tackles and one interception. The Steelers’ acquisition of safety Ryan Watts in the sixth round may have played a role in Thompson’s departure.

Additionally, Pittsburgh confirmed the previously reported dismissal of wide receiver Denzel Mims.

The 26-year-old Thompson made 22 tackles in six games during his previous season with the Steelers. In a victory over Cincinnati in Week 12, he intercepted a pass. After spending some time with Pittsburgh’s practice squad in 2023, 26-year-old Mims inked a reserve/futures deal in January. He spent three seasons as a player for the New York Jets in the past.
