Rowdy Tellez launched a home run into the Allegheny River, and Martín Pérez pitched six innings without giving up any runs. The Pittsburgh Pirates won two of the three games in the series, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 on Wednesday.
With a record of 2-5, Pérez allowed four hits, walked five, and struck out two. Pérez stated he was confident in his performance even though he had a high 5.61 ERA going into the game: “I trust my stuff every time I take the mound.” I was able to compete and hit many strikes today.
Tellez’s home run off Matthew Liberatore, a 447-foot blast into the river beyond the right field wall, helped extend the Pirates’ lead to five runs in the fourth inning. Tellez commented on the win, saying, “It was a good day. Martín pitched his heart out. This win puts us in a good position as we head into our road trip.”
Liberatore, on the other hand, struggled, giving up five runs on four hits over three innings, walking three and striking out three.
The Pirates have won eight of their previous ten games, putting them on a roll. They are now third in the NL Central, one game behind the second-place Cardinals, having won their first two series following the All-Star break against the Phillies and the Cardinals.
Derek Shelton, manager of Pittsburgh, expressed his club’s gratitude for what he called “a very important 4-2 homestand against the best team in baseball and the team ahead of us in the division.” We must continue to play well.
Eleven runners were left on base as the Cardinals, who are now half a game ahead of the Padres for the third wild card berth, struggled to make an impact. They have gone 3-3 since the All-Star break.
Connor Joe doubled to left center field with two outs and two runs in the second inning to help the Pirates score. Joe’s first RBIs since June 11 came from this hit, which cleared a diving Dylan Carlson in center field and brought in runs.
