One of the best offensive lines in the NFL is led by Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow.
Over the last two NFL seasons, the offensive line of the Detroit Lions has performed admirably.
The Lions rank as the top offensive line unit in the NFL according to a recent PFF 2024 ranking.
According to PFF, “The Lions’ offensive line was perhaps the greatest group in the NFL last season while healthy. The highest-graded offensive lineman in the league was right tackle Penei Sewell, while Frank Ragnow was the best centre.
Detroit was able to get a seasoned right guard in Kevin Zeitler, but they lost left guard Jonah Jackson to free agency. Graham Glasgow, who had a strong 2023 season in his comeback to Motown, is coming back for another season.
“Although the unit lost right guard in free agency, the Rams signed veteran guard Kevin Zeitler, who ranked 15th in PFF grade among guards in 2023.”
Hank Fraley, the offensive line coach, talked about the lack of participation from veterans like Taylor Decker and Zeitler in OTAs and minicamps this spring.
“When training camp arrives and the pads go on, we’ll truly get it. We like to say that this is difficult; it’s like being in our pants up front, D-line and O-line. Get it, that’s when we’re going to join,” Fraley remarked. But the way that individuals communicate, perceive the world, and carry out tasks while they are working together is what matters. I might phrase things slightly differently here than I did in Baltimore, but it still means the same thing, for someone like Kevin Zeitler who is coming from out of town.
“For him, it was important to communicate, and it was important for the new individuals we brought in to hear it as well. However, aside from the rookies, Kevin was the only one most of the time,” Fraley added. “So, it’s been good; it’s just the terminology we employ, which is what matters, how we categorise things, and that’s what he required this year.”
