University of Miami safety Mishael Powell has reportedly expressed his desire to leave the Hurricanes’ football program following a verbal altercation with coaching staff. The incident has sparked concerns about player-coach relationships and the overall team dynamic.
According to sources, the altercation occurred during a practice session last week. Powell, a junior safety, engaged in a heated exchange with defensive coordinator, Charlie Strong. The disagreement allegedly centered on Powell’s playing time and defensive strategies.
In an exclusive interview with the Miami Herald, Powell revealed his intentions to depart from the program.
“I love my teammates, but I feel undervalued and disrespected by the coaching staff,” Powell stated. “The altercation was the final straw. I deserve better, and I’m exploring my options.”
Miami head coach, Mario Cristobal, addressed the situation.
“We’re aware of Mishael’s concerns and are working to resolve them. Our door is always open for player feedback and growth.”
Teammates have expressed support for Powell:
“Mishael’s a brother, and we understand his frustrations,” said linebacker, Corey Flagg. “We hope he stays, but we respect his decision.”
Powell’s potential departure would significantly impact Miami’s defense. He has started 15 games over two seasons, recording 67 tackles and two interceptions.
