NORMAN, OKLA.- Oklahoma Sooners’ freshman wide receiver Zion Kearney will redshirt the 2024 season, setting the stage for a potentially explosive breakout campaign in 2026.
Kearney, a highly touted recruit from Fresno, Texas, arrived at Oklahoma with immense hype surrounding his skills. The 6’1″ receiver was expected to contribute immediately, but Coach Brent Venables and his staff have opted to preserve his eligibility.
“We believe Zion has tremendous potential, and this decision allows him to develop physically and mentally without burning a year of eligibility,” Venables explained. “He’ll continue to learn our system, refine his skills, and prepare for a significant role in 2025 and beyond.”
Kearney’s redshirt season will provide valuable time to focus on strength and conditioning, addressing areas crucial for success in the Big 12 Conference. His physical growth will complement his already impressive speed, agility, and ball-handling skills.
“Zion’s work ethic is outstanding,” said Oklahoma wide receivers coach, Dennis Simmons. “He’s already demonstrated flashes of brilliance in practice. With this extra year, he’ll refine his technique and become an even more dynamic receiver.”
The Sooners’ receiving corps, led by veteran players like Drake Stoops and Trevon West, will benefit from Kearney’s observation and learning opportunities. He’ll study the game, absorb coaching, and develop chemistry with quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
“Watching and learning from our experienced receivers will help Zion understand the nuances of our offense,” Gabriel noted. “When his time comes, he’ll be ready to make an instant impact.”
