Arizona State University’s athletic department announced yesterday that Herm Edwards has been relieved of his duties as head football coach, effective immediately.
Edwards, who took the reins in 2018, led the Sun Devils to three bowl appearances but struggled to maintain consistency. His tenure was marked by flashes of brilliance, but ultimately, the program’s lack of progress led to his dismissal.
We appreciate Coach Edwards’ contributions to our program, but we feel it’s time for a change,” said Athletic Director Ray Anderson. “Our goal is to compete for Pac-12 championships, and we believe a fresh perspective is necessary.
In a surprise move, ASU has tapped former NFL coach Mike McCarthy to replace Edwards. McCarthy, who led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl XLV victory, boasts an impressive resume and is expected to bring stability and expertise to the program.
“Coach McCarthy’s experience and success at the highest level make him an ideal fit for our program,” Anderson said. “We’re excited to see him take the helm and lead our team to new heights.
