Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Michigan has named Charles Woodson, the 1997 Heisman Trophy winner, as its new defensive coordinator. Woodson, a legendary defensive back and one of the most iconic players in Michigan football history, returns to his alma mater to spearhead the Wolverines’ defense.
Woodson’s appointment marks a triumphant return to Ann Arbor, where he starred as a defensive back from 1995 to 1997. During his time at Michigan, Woodson won the Heisman Trophy, was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year, and helped lead the Wolverines to a share of the Big Ten championship.
“It’s an honor to come back to Michigan and be a part of this incredible program,” Woodson said during a press conference. “I’m excited to work with these talented young players and help them achieve greatness.”
While Woodson has never held a coaching position at the collegiate or professional level, he has remained involved in football through various analyst roles. He spent nine seasons as an NFL analyst for ESPN and has worked as a color commentator for Michigan football games.
“Charles brings a level of expertise and passion that’s unmatched,” said Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. “His knowledge of the game, combined with his Michigan roots, makes him the perfect fit for this role.”
Woodson’s arrival signals a significant shift in Michigan’s defensive philosophy. The Wolverines have struggled defensively in recent seasons, ranking 47th nationally in total defense last year.
