Iron Maiden Reveals the Shocking Inspiration Behind ‘The Writing on the Wall’: A Hidden Message About the State of the World

In a recent interview, Iron Maiden has shed light on the true inspiration behind their hit track “The Writing on the Wall” from their 2021 album Senjutsu, revealing a deeper, more shocking context that has left fans both intrigued and contemplative. The band explained that the song, which is known for its apocalyptic themes and compelling visuals, was inspired by their concerns over the growing instability and uncertainty in the world today.

Frontman Bruce Dickinson stated that the song draws directly from the biblical story of “the writing on the wall” as a metaphor for current global events. “We saw parallels between ancient warnings and what’s happening today—whether it’s political turmoil, environmental crises, or the rise of technology that divides rather than unites us,” Dickinson said. He explained that the lyrics are a reflection of the band’s observation of society’s trajectory, hinting at humanity’s collective choices that could lead to dire consequences.

Guitarist Adrian Smith added that the inspiration also stemmed from the events of the past few years, including the pandemic, political tensions, and the general atmosphere of fear and unpredictability that have defined the world. “It felt like we were living through a moment in history where the old ways were ending, and nobody knew what would come next,” Smith noted.

The music video for “The Writing on the Wall,” which features post-apocalyptic imagery, was a collaboration between the band and two former Pixar animators. It visually represents the idea of a society on the brink of collapse, but also offers a glimmer of hope. Dickinson emphasized, “It’s not just doom and gloom—there’s a message of empowerment. The idea that even though the world may seem like it’s falling apart, we still have the power to change it if we heed the warnings.”

The revelation of these inspirations has sparked much debate among fans and critics alike, with many seeing the track as a modern-day protest song that urges listeners to wake up to the dangers facing society. For others, it’s simply a continuation of the classic Iron Maiden style—delivering heavy, thought-provoking messages in their unmistakable metal fashion. Whatever the interpretation, “The Writing on the Wall” has certainly struck a chord, highlighting the band’s ability to remain relevant while addressing pressing global concerns.
