San Diego State University’s men’s basketball team suffered a significant blow yesterday when leading scorer Micah Parrish suffered a broken wrist during practice. The injury occurred when Parrish fell awkwardly after a drive to the basket, causing immediate pain and discomfort.
According to sources close to the program, Parrish underwent X-rays and an MRI, confirming the break. The projected recovery time is 6-8 weeks, putting Parrish’s return around late January or early February.
“We’re devastated for Micah,” said Aztecs head coach Brian Dutcher. “He’s our leader and top scorer. Losing him for an extended period will require adjustments, but we have confidence in our depth and resilience.”
Dutcher emphasized the team’s focus on supporting Parrish during his recovery. “Micah’s health is our top priority. We’ll ensure he receives the best care possible and is ready to return when the time comes.”
Parrish’s absence will significantly impact the Aztecs’ offense. The junior guard averages 17.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, accounting for over 25% of the team’s scoring.
“Micah’s injury creates opportunities for others to step up,” said Dutcher. “We’ll rely on our bench players to fill the void and make adjustments to our game plan.”
Senior guard Adam Seiko and sophomore forward Nathan Mensah are expected to take on increased roles. Seiko, a veteran shooter, will likely assume more ball-handling responsibilities, while Mensah’s athleticism and length will be crucial in the paint.
“Adam and Nathan have been preparing for moments like this,” Dutcher said. “We trust them to make plays and contribute to our success.”
The Aztecs face a challenging stretch without Parrish, including matchups against Mountain West Conference rivals Boise State, Utah State, and Nevada.
“We’ll need to be resourceful and adaptable,” Dutcher acknowledged. “Our players will be tested, but we’re confident in our system and ability to adjust.”
“I’m disappointed, but I’ll work hard to return stronger,” Parrish said. “My teammates will step up, and we’ll continue to compete at a high level. I’ll be cheering them on from the sidelines.”
Parrish will undergo surgery to stabilize the break and begin rehabilitation shortly after. The Aztecs’ training staff, led by head athletic trainer Tom Abdenour, will oversee his recovery.
“Tom and his team will ensure Micah receives the best care possible,” Dutcher said. “We’ll take a cautious approach to ensure Micah’s long-term health.”
