Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule has announced his transition to the role of Athletic Director, effective immediately. Rhule, who took the reins in 2023, will relinquish his coaching duties to focus on leading the athletic department.
The surprise decision comes on the heels of Rhule’s successful first season, which saw the Cornhuskers finish with a 9-4 record and a bowl game victory.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this exceptional athletic department,” Rhule said. “My passion for Nebraska and its student-athletes remains unwavering, and I’m excited to contribute in a new capacity.”
Rhule has tapped current assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Tony White, as his successor. White, a veteran coach with over two decades of experience, has been instrumental in shaping Nebraska’s defense.
“Tony’s the perfect fit to lead our football program,” Rhule said. “His expertise, leadership, and commitment to our student-athletes make him an outstanding head coach.”
White expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity. “I’m honored to follow Coach Rhule’s legacy and build upon the foundation he’s established.”
Sources close to the program indicate that Rhule’s decision was motivated by a desire to address the athletic department’s broader needs.
“Matt recognized the importance of a unified vision for Nebraska athletics,” a source said. “He wants to ensure the department’s long-term success, and this transition allows him to focus on that goal.”
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor, Rodney Bennett, praised Rhule’s leadership and vision.
“Coach Rhule’s selflessness and commitment to Nebraska’s student-athletes are exemplary,” Bennett said. “We’re grateful for his continued service and excited about Tony White’s appointment as head coach.”
As Athletic Director, Rhule will oversee all aspects of Nebraska’s athletic programs, including fundraising, facilities development, and strategic planning.
“My priority is to enhance the student-athlete experience and position Nebraska for continued success,” Rhule said.
White, now at the helm of the football program, emphasized continuity and growth.
“We’ll maintain the momentum Coach Rhule established while incorporating our own twists,” White said. “Our focus remains on developing young men and competing at the highest level.”
Cornhuskers players expressed surprise but confidence in the transition.
“Coach Rhule’s leadership will still be felt throughout the department,” quarterback Heinrich Haarberg said. “We trust Coach White and are excited to continue our journey under his guidance.”
Nebraska fans and alumni have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the unexpected move.
“Rhule’s leadership will be missed on the sidelines, but his impact will be felt in the AD role,” said season ticket holder, Tom Hansen.
“Matt’s decision demonstrates his commitment to Nebraska’s long-term success,” said Iowa Hawkeyes head coach, Kirk Ferentz. “Tony White is an excellent choice to lead the Cornhuskers.”
