The Chicago Bears reportedly want to interview Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman for their vacant head coaching job, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Freeman is in the middle of his third full season with Notre Dame and is set to coach in the national championship game against Ohio State on January 20. He has not coached in the NFL throughout his career.
“I am told the team wants to interview Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman for the job,” Pelissero said. “Freeman is in the midst of a magical run with the Fighting Irish to the national championship game. Obviously it’s unlikely that he would entertain NFL overtures prior to that game a week from tomorrow against Ohio State. But the Bears have done extensive research for months on Marcus Freeman. He’s only 39 years old (and it) would not be a shock, if at some point he at least considers going to the NFL.”
By the looks of the report, the Bears certainly did their homework. He’s 33-9 as a head coach, including 14-1 this season going into the CFP title game.
Freeman, 39, has quickly risen through the coaching ranks, taking over at Notre Dame in 2022 after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator. I
n his first season as head coach, he led the Fighting Irish to an 8-5 record and a victory in the Gator Bowl. This season, Freeman has guided Notre Dame to a 10-2 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
The Bears are looking for a young, energetic coach who can bring a new identity to the franchise. Freeman fits that bill perfectly. He is a proven winner at the college level and has a reputation for being a strong recruiter and motivator.
However, it is important to note that Freeman is currently focused on preparing his team for the national championship game.
It is unlikely that he will agree to an interview with the Bears until after the season is over.
If the Bears are serious about hiring Freeman, they will need to be patient. But if they can land him, they would be getting a rising star in the coaching world.
