Tennessee Volunteers football program is rekindling its rich history by bringing back one of its all-time greats. Peerless Price, the former standout wide receiver and a key figure in Tennessee’s 1998 national championship season, has been named the team’s new wide receivers coach. The announcement has sent waves of excitement through Vol Nation, as fans welcome a familiar face with deep ties to the program.
Price’s illustrious career at Tennessee is one for the record books. During his time with the Vols from 1995 to 1998, he etched his name in history as one of the program’s most electrifying playmakers. His most memorable performance came in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl, where he hauled in four receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown, leading Tennessee to a 23-16 victory over Florida State to secure the national title.
Price finished his college career with 2,298 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire young athletes.
After his collegiate success, Price was drafted in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He went on to enjoy an eight-year professional career, amassing over 7,000 receiving yards and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2002.
His extensive experience as both a player and a mentor makes him a natural fit for his new coaching role.
In his introductory press conference, Price expressed his excitement about returning to Knoxville. “This program means everything to me,” he said. “Tennessee gave me the foundation to succeed in football and in life. It’s an honor to be back and to help shape the next generation of Vols wide receivers.”
Head Coach Josh Heupel praised Price’s hiring, citing his passion for the program and his ability to connect with players.
“Peerless is not only one of the best to ever wear the orange and white, but he also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our coaching staff,” Heupel stated. “He knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and our players will benefit greatly from his guidance.”
Price’s return comes at a pivotal time for the Volunteers as they aim to solidify their position among the SEC’s elite. With his deep understanding of the game and his love for Tennessee, Peerless Price is poised to make a lasting impact both on and off the field.
