Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has publicly expressed regret for his recent criticism of star wide receiver Travis Hunter, offering a heartfelt apology for the remarks.
In an emotional statement, Sanders acknowledged that his comments, which questioned Hunter’s conduct after a recent on-field incident, were misplaced and could have been handled more thoughtfully.
“I want to sincerely apologize to Travis and the entire team for my words,” Sanders said. “I take full responsibility for what I said, and I know I could have approached the situation differently.
As a coach, my role is to uplift and guide my players, not to publicly criticize them in a way that could cause harm.”
Hunter, who has been a standout for the Buffaloes this season, was at the center of the controversy after Sanders’ comments regarding his actions on and off the field. While Sanders had intended to challenge Hunter to be better in certain aspects, his choice of words led to backlash from fans, media, and even some players within the program.
Recognizing the impact his words had on Hunter, Sanders took the opportunity to clarify that his intent was never to undermine the player’s efforts or commitment to the team.
“Travis is a phenomenal talent and an important part of this program. I respect his dedication and his hard work,” Sanders added.
The apology comes as Sanders aims to foster a positive and supportive environment for all of his players, particularly after a challenging start to the season.
His recognition of the situation and willingness to make amends is expected to help restore trust and unity within the Colorado football program as they move forward.
