Nebraska is set to add to its offensive staff with a name familiar to offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen.
According to Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247Sports, the Huskers are set to hire Kentucky wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts to coach wide receivers.
Shorts has a long history with Holgorsen, having played for Holgorsen at West Virginia before coaching wide receivers under him at Houston for three seasons.
Shorts moved to Kentucky as its wide receivers coach in December of 2023, spending this past season with the Wildcats.
In his first season as a collegiate coach in 2021, Shorts led Tank Dell to first-team American Athletic Conference honors and top-15 national rankings in receptions (90), receiving yards (1,329) and receiving touchdowns (12). As a team, UH ranked 23rd nationally in passing offense (271.6) under Holgorsen.
In 2022, nine players combined to catch 40 touchdowns, once again led by Dell, who totaled a nation-high 109 catches for 1,398 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns while earning second-team All-American honors.
As a player at West Virginia under Holgorsen, Shorts closed his collegiate career ranked fifth on the WVU career chart with 177 receptions and sixth with 2,263 receiving yards and 14 scores. He owns the program’s freshman receptions record with 45 in his first year with the program.
A native of New Jersey, Shorts was named to the 247Sports Top-30 Under 30 for his work at Houston.
The addition of Shorts puts in doubt the future of current Husker wide receivers coach Garret McGuire. McGuire was still in Lincoln on Tuesday morning working with Husker wide receivers and could see a different role on Nebraska’s reshuffled staff.
