Nebraska landed a massive piece on the defensive side of the ball with the addition of Overland Park, Kansas native Dawson Merritt.
247 sports ranks him 116 in the nation and has a high 4-star rating. You see why when you look at his film – he is a rangy athlete with incredible closing speed to the ball.
He would be a dream addition to Tony White’s multiple defenses, as he could rush the backfield and go side to side against speedy receivers.
Merritt flipped from Alabama, which is no mean feat, even minus coaching legend Nick Saban. Getting a top player from an SEC powerhouse bodes well for the future as Nebraska looks set to replace multiple veterans on the defensive side of the ball.
To become a top team, you need to have dudes who can make plays, which Merritt certainly is.
Merritt is 6-3 (215lbs) with a large frame that could do with some extra good weight after some time in the gym, which will help with the toughness required to last a season playing against some of the top teams in the nation.
Credit must go to the staff for sticking with his recruitment after committing to Alabama early in the cycle.
I am excited to see him form an impressive combo with Nebraska in-state linebacker Christian Jones.
