Syracuse Orange football program is thrilled to announce the return of one of its most iconic defensive legends, Dwight Freeney, to the team’s coaching staff. Freeney, a legendary defensive end, will join the Orange as a special assistant coach, working closely with the team’s defensive unit.
Freeney, a Syracuse native, played for the Orange from 1998 to 2001, earning All-Big East honors and setting multiple school records for sacks and tackles for loss. His impressive collegiate career paved the way for a storied 16-year NFL career, including 11 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, where he won a Super Bowl XLI championship.
“I’m ecstatic to welcome Dwight back to the Syracuse family,” said Head Coach Dino Babers. “His passion, expertise, and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly inspire our student-athletes. His presence will be invaluable in developing our defensive unit.”
Freeney’s return to Syracuse marks a new chapter in his post-playing career. “I’m honored to give back to the program that shaped me into the person I am today,” Freeney said. “I’m excited to share my knowledge and experience with the next generation of Orange athletes.”
As a special assistant coach, Freeney will focus on mentoring the team’s defensive linemen and pass rushers. His expertise in these areas will undoubtedly enhance the Orange’s defensive capabilities. “Dwight’s understanding of the pass rush game is unparalleled,” said Defensive Coordinator Tony White. “He’ll be a tremendous asset to our coaching staff.”
Freeney’s homecoming has generated buzz throughout the Syracuse community. “Dwight’s return is a tremendous boost for our program,” said Athletic Director John Wildhack. “His legacy and achievements will inspire our student-athletes to strive for greatness.”
The Syracuse Orange football team kicks off its 2024 season on September 2nd against Colgate. With Freeney on board, expectations are high for a successful campaign. “We’re excited to have Dwight back in the fold,” said senior defensive lineman, Kingsley Jonathan. “His guidance will help us take our game to the next level.”
Freeney’s first game back on the Syracuse sidelines will be an emotional one. “I’m looking forward to being part of the Orange family again,” he said. “Let’s make this season unforgettable! I’m ready to help bring championship-level defense back to the Carrier Dome.”
