Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Foligno didn’t mince words when discussing Garnet Hathaway’s antics in Saturday’s 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
“[Hathaway] is doing what he has to do to stay relevant in this league,” Foligno said, visibly frustrated. “He’s not going to score 30 goals, so he’s got to find other ways to make an impact.”
Foligno’s comments came after Hathaway’s aggressive play led to several scrums and penalties throughout the game. The Wild forward took exception to Hathaway’s tactics, which he felt crossed the line.
“There’s a difference between playing hard and playing dirty,” Foligno explained. “Hathaway knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s trying to get under our skin, and sometimes it works.”
Hathaway, known for his physical play, has developed a reputation as an agitator. While some praise his energy and toughness, others criticize his methods.
“I don’t think [Hathaway] is trying to hurt anyone,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “He’s just playing his game. If others don’t like it, that’s not our problem.”
The Wild’s loss to the Flyers marked their third straight defeat, and tensions are running high within the locker room. Foligno’s comments reflect the frustration and urgency felt by the team.
“We need to focus on our game, not worrying about what Hathaway’s doing,” Wild captain Jared Spurgeon said. “We can’t let him get under our skin.”
As for Hathaway, he remained unapologetic about his style of play. “I’m just trying to help my team win,” he said with a shrug. “If that means getting under someone’s skin, so be it.”
The Wild will look to bounce back from their losing streak when they face the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.
