Tennessee Volunteers guard Santiago Vescovi announced his decision to enter the 2024 NBA draft. The 6’3″ junior from Uruguay hasbeen a key contributor to the Vols’ success over the past three seasons.
Vescovi’s decision comes as a surprise to many, as he was expected to return to Tennessee for his senior season. The guard averaged 13.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season, earning him Second-Team All-SEC honors.
“I’m grateful for my time at Tennessee, but I feel I’m ready to take the next step in my basketball career,” Vescovi said in a statement. “I’m excited to test my skills against the best in the world.”
Vescovi’s departure leaves a significant void in Tennessee’s backcourt. Coach Rick Barnes will need to rely on younger players to fill the gap. “Santiago’s decision is bittersweet,” Barnes said. “We’re proud of his growth, but we’ll miss his leadership and talent.”
The NBA draft process will provide Vescovi with valuable exposure. He’s expected to participate in the NBA Combine and individual team workouts. Scouts praise his shooting range, court vision and defensive prowess.
Tennessee’s recruiting class, ranked among the nation’s best, will help alleviate the loss. Five-star prospects Julian Phillips and Jordan Walsh are expected to contribute immediately.
Vescovi’s decision also raises questions about his potential draft position. Analysts project him as a mid-to-late second-round pick. “Santiago’s got a great chance to make an NBA roster,” said ESPN draft expert Jonathan Givony.
As Vescovi begins his professional journey, Tennessee fans will cherish memories of his clutch performances and unforgettable moments in orange. His legacy as one of the program’s all-time greats is cemented.
