AUSTIN, TEXAS – Texas Longhorns freshman wide receiver Ryan Wingo announced his decision to redshirt the 2025 season, citing a focus on solidifying his academic foundation.
Wingo, a highly touted recruit from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida, arrived at Texas with immense hype surrounding his skills. Despite his impressive athletic abilities, the freshman receiver has prioritized his education.
“Academics come first,” Wingo emphasized. “I want to ensure I’m setting myself up for success beyond football. Redshirting allows me to focus on my studies and establish a strong academic foundation.”
Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian supports Wingo’s decision, highlighting the importance of balancing athletics and academics. “Ryan’s commitment to his education is admirable. We prioritize our student-athletes’ overall development, and this decision aligns with that philosophy.”
Wingo’s redshirt season will provide valuable time to refine his academic skills, addressing areas crucial for long-term success. His decision serves as a testament to Texas’ emphasis on academic excellence.
“Ryan’s prioritization of academics demonstrates our program’s commitment to student-athlete well-being,” said Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. “We’re proud of his decision and will support him every step of the way.”
The Longhorns’ receiving corps, led by veterans Jordan Whittington and Tarik Black, will continue to thrive without Wingo’s immediate contributions. His absence creates opportunities for other talented receivers to step up. “Ryan’s decision doesn’t diminish his potential impact,” Sarkisian noted. “When he returns, he’ll be an even more focused, disciplined, and well-rounded athlete.”
Wingo’s redshirt year will also allow him to develop physically, addressing areas crucial for success in the Big 12 Conference. His growth will complement his already impressive speed, agility, and ball-handling skills.
“Ryan’s work ethic is outstanding,” said Texas wide receivers coach, Andre Coleman. “He’ll continue to learn our system, refine his technique, and prepare for a significant role in 2026.”
The NCAA’s five-year eligibility rule allows Wingo to preserve his four years of eligibility, ensuring he’ll be ready to contribute significantly when he returns. “Redshirting gives me a chance to grow, learn, and prepare for the future,” Wingo explained. “I’m confident this decision will benefit me in the long run.”
As Wingo focuses on academics, Texas fans eagerly anticipate his 2026 debut. With a strong academic foundation and refined skills, Wingo is poised to become a standout receiver in the Big 12.
“Ryan’s decision demonstrates his commitment to excellence,” Sarkisian said. “When he returns, he’ll be an integral part of our team’s success.”
