Stars Topple Oilers as Dallas’ Youth Continues to Fuel Hot Start to the Season

Dallas Stars’ Tyler Seguin (91) Jamie Benn (14) and Roope Hintz (24) congratulate Jason Robertson (21) following his first period goal against the Minnesota Wild in Game 5 of a first-round NHL hockey playoff series in Dallas, April 25, 2023.

The Dallas Stars secured a commanding victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, toppling their Western Conference rivals 5-2 in a thrilling contest that highlighted Dallas’ impressive mix of young talent and veteran leadership. The win marks another chapter in the Stars’ hot start to the 2024-25 season, with their youthful core continuing to shine in pivotal moments.

Leading the charge was 22-year-old forward Wyatt Johnston, who notched a goal and two assists, showcasing his dynamic offensive skill set. Johnston, now in his third season with the Stars, has quickly established himself as one of the team’s top contributors, and his performance against the Oilers further solidified his role as a key piece of the franchise’s future. “We’re seeing a lot of growth in our young guys,” said Stars head coach Pete DeBoer. “They’re stepping up in big moments, and Wyatt has been fantastic for us.”

Johnston wasn’t the only young star making waves. Defenseman Thomas Harley, 23, played a crucial role on the blue line, logging significant minutes and contributing an assist in the victory. His poise and strong defensive play have become essential to the team’s success, and his partnership with veteran Miro Heiskanen has helped solidify Dallas’ defense early in the season.

The Oilers, led by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, struggled to break through Dallas’ defense and find consistent offensive rhythm. Despite a goal from McDavid in the second period, the Stars’ strong defensive efforts and the goaltending of Jake Oettinger, who stopped 30 of 32 shots, kept the Oilers at bay. Oettinger’s stellar play in net has been a key factor in Dallas’ early-season success, with the 25-year-old netminder continuing to elevate his game.

On the offensive end, Dallas’ young forwards, including Johnston, 21-year-old Logan Stankoven, and 20-year-old Maveric Lamoureux, have injected energy and speed into the lineup. Stankoven, in particular, added an assist and has been a standout early in the season with his ability to create scoring opportunities. “It’s fun to be a part of this group,” Stankoven said after the game. “We’re all pushing each other to get better every day, and it’s exciting to see the results.”

Veterans like Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin have embraced their roles as leaders for the younger players, helping guide the team through the early stages of the season. Benn, who scored his third goal of the season, praised the team’s youth movement: “These young guys are playing with confidence, and it’s really fun to see. They’re bringing a lot of energy, and we’re feeding off that.”

With the win over the Oilers, the Stars improve to 5-1-0 on the season, sitting near the top of the Western Conference standings. As Dallas’ youth continues to fuel their strong start, expectations are rising for a team that looks poised to make a deep playoff run. For now, the Stars’ blend of young talent and experienced leadership has them looking like one of the most exciting teams in the league.
