Breaking News: Duke Football Coach Mike Elko Diagnosed with Health Issue, Takes Leave of Absence

 

According to a statement released by the university, Coach Elko is undergoing medical evaluation and treatment for an undisclosed condition.

“We wish Coach Elko a speedy recovery and are thinking of him and his family during this challenging time, said Athletic Director Nina King.

Defensive coordinator Robb Smith will serve as interim head coach in Elko’s absence.

Coach Smith has our full confidence, and we’re confident the team will continue to thrive under his leadership,” King added.

Elko, in his second season as Duke’s head coach, has led the Blue Devils to significant improvements on the field.


Players and staff expressed support for their coach, with senior captain Casey Holman saying, We’re all thinking of Coach Elko and sending our best wishes for his recovery.



Details regarding Elko’s health issue remain private, but the university assures fans that he will receive the best medical care.

The leave of absence comes at a critical juncture in the season, with Duke facing tough conference opponents in the coming weeks.
