Owen Chambliss, a linebacker for San Diego State, underwent surgery this week to fix a hand injury he sustained during last week’s victory over Hawaii. Chambliss will be absent from this week’s Mountain West game against Wyoming, at the absolute least.
“We’ll see how that develops further,” SDSU head coach Sean Lewis remarked. “We’ll see how it goes; he’s out this week.”
With 27 tackles, Chambliss—a freshman transfer from Utah—is third on the team. Next up at Chambliss’ position are senior Cody Moon and junior Brady Anderson, who has been hindered by a knee ailment.
The Aztecs already were missing starting linebacker Tano Letuli, who had surgery last week to repair a broken right thumb. Senior transfer Kyle Moretti and junior DJ Herman stepped in for Letuli against the Rainbow Warriors.
Letuli returned to practice this week with his hand heavily taped into what is commonly referred to as a “club.” He was expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks, but there’s a possibility Letuli could return for this week’s game at Wyoming.
“We’ll see,” Lewis said. “Doctors orders on that one. We’ll see when we get up there.”
The Aztecs have had a rash of hand injuries this year.
Safety Eric Cutler played with a club on his right hand through the first month of the season, and defensive lineman Tupu Alualu still has a club on his right hand.
“Some it’s been, ‘OK, club it up, we’re good to go,’ ” Lewis said. “For others it’s, ‘Be patient. We’ll continue to work through it to make sure a kid’s good and he can’t do any further damage to it.’
“Our doctors have been more than fair about all that.”
The Aztecs definitely will be without left guard Myles Murao, who had arthroscopic surgery to “clean up” his left knee.
“He’s had those lingering knee things, so we’re just trying to get him back to a spot where he can be competitive and protect himself, most importantly.”
