American Honda Hits Back at Ken Roczen’s Allegations Amid Claims of Political Interference in Contract Negotiations
American Honda recently addressed allegations made by Ken Roczen regarding the breakdown in their contract negotiations, which led to Roczen leaving Honda. The motocross star had claimed that Honda’s reluctance to support his participation in the World Supercross Championship was politically motivated, leading to an impasse between the two parties. In response, Honda’s Manager of Sports & Experiential, Brandon Wilson, released a statement to clarify the company’s stance.
Wilson emphasized that Honda genuinely enjoyed working with Roczen over the past six years and that their offer to extend his contract for the 2023 season remained on the table. However, the offer came with a stipulation: Roczen was not permitted to participate in any racing series that competed with AMA-sanctioned Supercross and Motocross events, with which Honda had partnerships. Roczen’s plan to compete in the FIM World Supercross Championship, which Honda considered a direct competitor to their existing commitments, was reportedly a key factor in the breakdown of negotiations.
Honda acknowledged that while their priorities didn’t align with Roczen’s aspirations, their respect for his talent and contributions remained unchanged. They denied claims of politically motivated decisions aimed at undermining Roczen’s career, framing the stipulations as an attempt to protect their partnerships and maintain consistency with other riders.
The dispute highlights the growing tension between factory teams, racing organizations, and individual rider
ambitions in the world of motocross, sparking debates over how teams and manufacturers should navigate their allegiances to racing series and their commitments to riders.
