Jesjua Angoy Cruyff Reveals Why Grandfather Johan Cruyff Loved Him More Than the Rest of the Family
In an emotional and candid interview, Jesjua Angoy Cruyff, grandson of the late football legend Johan Cruyff, has opened up about his special bond with his iconic grandfather. Speaking for the first time in depth about his relationship with the footballing great, Jesjua revealed that Johan Cruyff had a particularly close connection with him, saying, “He always said there was something about me that reminded him of himself.”
Jesjua, the son of Johan’s daughter Chantal Cruyff, explained that despite the strong family ties, Johan shared a unique bond with him, often referring to him as “the one who got it.” While Johan was known for his brilliance on the pitch and sharp football mind, his grandson believes that it was their shared understanding of the game—and life—that made their connection stand out.
“He saw a lot of himself in me, not just as a footballer, but as a thinker,” Jesjua shared. “It wasn’t about being the best player on the field. It was about how I saw the game, how I could slow it down and look at it from different angles. He used to tell me that was rare, even in the top players.”
Jesjua also admitted that the close bond wasn’t always easy for the rest of the family to understand. “Sometimes, I think it might have been hard for the others because they could see how close we were. But that’s just how it was. He had his favorites, and I was one of them.”
The former Barcelona youth player, who has pursued his own football career in the lower leagues of Spain and the Netherlands, also spoke about how Johan’s influence shaped his life both on and off the field. “He taught me so much more than just football. It was about the way you approach life, with confidence, but also humility. He always reminded me that football is a reflection of life—you have to keep moving forward, but you need to understand where you’ve come from.”
Johan Cruyff, who passed away in 2016, remains one of football’s most revered figures, known for revolutionizing the modern game with his philosophy of “Total Football.” His grandson, while not reaching the same heights in the sport, has carried the Cruyff legacy forward in his own way.
In his interview, Jesjua emphasized that he’s proud to have been part of his grandfather’s life in such a meaningful way. “To me, it’s not about the trophies or fame—what mattered was the relationship we had, the conversations, the lessons. That’s what stays with me. I’ll always be grateful for the time we had.”
This rare insight into the Cruyff family dynamic has captured the attention of football fans worldwide, offering a deeper glimpse into the personal life of one of the sport’s greatest icons.
