MotoGP Introduces ‘Casey Stoner Trophy’ to Honor the Legendary Champion

In a historic move to recognize one of the sport’s most celebrated figures, MotoGP has officially announced the creation of the Casey Stoner Trophy, which will be awarded annually to the winner of the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The new accolade pays tribute to the two-time MotoGP World Champion, who remains one of the most iconic riders in the history of the sport.

Stoner, who dominated the MotoGP circuit during his prime years, is widely regarded for his incredible skill, particularly at Phillip Island, where he won six consecutive races between 2007 and 2012. His flawless performances at the Australian circuit have become legendary, making the location a fitting choice for this prestigious honor.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta highlighted the significance of the trophy:

“Casey Stoner’s contributions to MotoGP, and his unparalleled success at Phillip Island, make him a true legend of the sport. We wanted to ensure his legacy continues to inspire future generations, and the Casey Stoner Trophy will do just that. It’s a symbol of excellence and mastery at one of the world’s most demanding circuits.”

The trophy itself, designed by renowned artist Ross Lovegrove, features a dynamic sculpture of a motorcycle in motion, capturing the essence of speed and precision. A centerpiece of the design is Stoner’s iconic #27, immortalized at the base of the trophy.

In a heartfelt statement, Stoner expressed his gratitude for the honor:

“It’s incredibly humbling to have this trophy in my name. Phillip Island has always held a special place in my heart, and I’m honored that this circuit, where I had some of my best memories, will be linked to my legacy in this way. I hope it inspires riders to push their limits, just as I always tried to do.”

The Casey Stoner Trophy will be awarded for the first time at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, with anticipation already building as to who will claim the inaugural honor. Fans and pundits alike have expressed their excitement at this recognition of one of MotoGP’s greats, cementing Stoner’s place in the sport’s rich history.
